About Me

I am a working writer of short stories/novels with an MFA in Creative Writing from Boise State University and a PhD in English with a Creative Writing emphasis from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which is where I met my husband and fellow grad-student at the time, John Struloeff (Pepperdine's Director of Creative Writing). We have a six-year-old son, Will, and a two-year-old daughter, Maddie.

I've been teaching creative writing at Pepperdine for six years, and typically teach Intro, the Novel Writing class, Writing For the Professional Market, and Young Adult Literature.

I also write as Cynthia Hand, and it's under this (my maiden) name that I publish my New York Times bestselling young adult series with HarperTeen. The first book, UNEARTHLY, was published in 2011, and has been optioned for a film and reprinted and translated in over twenty countries around the world. There are two sequels, entitled HALLOWED (2012) and BOUNDLESS (2013), and an enovella entitled RADIANT. I am currently working on a new project with HarperTeen.

Publishing has been a crazy, wonderful time, full of pinch-me moments, which you can follow on my blog www.cynthiahandbooks.com, but I also love to teach and am always eager to meet my batches of new students every semester.
